Room 322, Tuesday Morning

Anders was a man of many talents, and ranking high among them was a talent for self-pity. After the disastrous encounter with Nathan the day before, he'd gone back to his room to mope around for the rest of the day. Lachlan was better company than people, anyhow. At least when Lachlan avoided him it wasn't personal -- it was just part of being a cat.

He'd always known Nathan kept parts of himself shut away; he even understood why, or thought he did. But to be flatly told to go away after being together so long -- it hurt. It hurt deeper than Anders would have guessed it would. And he was determined not to go chasing after Nathan to give him a chance to say the same thing again, at least not yet.

Without class or work to keep him busy, Anders felt his foul mood continuing after he woke up. Determined not to let it ruin a second day, he pulled out one of the spellbooks he'd cadged from the magic shop and opened it to a chapter on the use of Entropy. If he wasn't ready to seek anyone out -- and he didn't think he was -- at least he could distract himself.

"Lucky you," Anders said. "Love is fantastic, but when things are going wrong it hurts like nothing else."

He spoke from recent experience, yes.

See, if this had been Cassandra, he'd suggest hitting things with a comment like that. Way easier.

"Should I have brought ale?"

"It wouldn't have hurt," Anders said. "It's nothing. Nathan was trying to tell me he wants to works something through on his own and things got shouty."

"And now you are here and he is not," Thorin replied. "Are you at fault or he?"

"He told me to go away first."

Which wasn't exactly an answer.

Thorin was bound to take Anders' side regardless, so he merely gave him a pat on the shoulder. "I am certain if the love is true, you will forgive him."

"And if it's not true, I'm better off breaking it off anyhow?" Anders guessed. "Probably. It just hurts no matter who was more wrong."

"Then, perhaps, that is how you know it to be true."

[not_every_mage]

"If I didn't love him, it wouldn't hurt so much?" Anders said, trying it on. "Maybe. Though me feeling that way doesn't mean he does."

[dwarvenswagger]

"Indeed it is," Thorin replied, nodding in agreement. "When you are less wounded."

And possibly more drunk.

"A trip to an ale house may be in order."
