33 Apocalypse Ave, Tuesday Afternoon

For Anders the little demon, Halloween was a day full of his usual mischief. Sprinkling a little itching powder in some underwear drawers, sneaking into a few houses to turn the thermostat three degrees too hot, and -- just to cap off the day -- blowing on some mainland traffic lights to turn them red at inconvenient times.

He was still chuckling over the last one as he let himself into the house and sat down on the couch, tail extended along the cushions. He needed to take a TV break before it was time for trick-or-treating and some real fun.

"Because I can't sit here and read you books all day," Dante said. "There's parties."

Spoiler: he would not be going to them.

"Meeeeeee!" Kathy said forcefully, jerking her thumb towards her chest. "Paaaaaaarty!"

He was not allowed to lock her in her room and then go to all the parties she'd been planning on going to!

"You're a zombie. You're not going to a party," Dante said, turning on the TV.

Kathy glared at Dante, frustrated. Eliot was a werewolf, Raven a seamonster, and Anders was a demon and no one was telling them they couldn't go to parties!

But that was a very complicated thought to have, never mind actually say aloud. "Paaaaaarrrrrrrtyyy," she said, pointing at him again. That should get the point across, right?

Anders sighed,reaching a hand toward her snacks. "All right. I'll eat some if it's that important to you," he said. "What did you want to watch?"

"Hi," Anders said, with a little wave of his tail. "I think her finger's falling off again."

This was going to go over beautifully tomorrow. Did Hallmark have a 'thanks for loving me so much you ate brains when the island was messing with us' card?

"Zooooooombiiiiiie shoooooow," Kathy said slowly, giving him a smile of blackened teeth. She liked the show about the zombie ME who pretended to be psychic to solve crimes. Too few shows put the zombies in the protagonist seat.

"Nooooooooo," Dante said, drawing out the exact same tone.

Dante rubbed his forehead. "Probably going to keep doing that all day," he said.

He meant both the finger and the general weirdness.

You were the worst, Dante, no matter how much she was going to appreciate you during her flight out of the house tomorrow.

"Yooooooou gooooooo!" she protested, trying to get him to acknowledge how arbitrary and unfair his standards were. It wasn't like she was planning on eating any monster brains! Just human ones!

"I keep telling her to give up on it, but she's determined," Anders sighed, cocking his horns at Dante. "What's up with you?"

"Zombie show," Anders agreed, sharp teeth nibbling around the edges of the brainsadilla. (It wasn't bad, really. Would be better with hot sauce.)

He turned on Netflix and flixcked through episodes of Shambling Corpses, wondering which one would have the most dead zombies in it. He was a demon; even if he loved Kathy, he was still going to have a little fun at her expense.

He paused on one school and mused, "I think that's the one where they run through the Shamblers with a lawn mower."

"Nooooo!" Kathy moaned. This wasn't the zombie ME show! This was the show with the humans who were positively stupid and yet still kept winning. Ugh, it was the worst! Kathy had long-since decided that if she'd been on the show, she would have made it a priority to eat the obnoxious kid who never stayed where he was told.

She moaned again, covering her eyes with her hands (and peeking through her fingers), as one of the humans found a steamroller and sent it straight towards a group of zombie children.

"Meeeeeeeeeeeeean."

"Yeah, I guess the people are being kind of mean," Anders said philosophically, eyes still glued to the screen. "But man, it's cool. Watch all that zombie blood splatter!"

The steamroller was covered in blood and guts as it crashed into a tree and exploded, fireball frying another dozen zombies. Anders laughed and raised his arms triumphantly. "Kaboom!"

She'd meant you, demon!Anders! She'd meant you!

That was fine, she was making a grab for the controller anyway. And, considering her general speed, Anders would have to move...like at all...to keep it away from her.

"Trying to make sure Kathy doesn't go out and eat anyone's brains," Dante said, eyeing... Anders, sure. "Today sucks."

"I'm not a zombie who wants to eat people's brains," Dante pointed out.

"Huuuuuumans," she insisted.

Which was totally all right for consumption, right?

"Exactly," Dante said, exasperated.

Why were they arguing if they were in agreement?

Kathy shambled towards the doorway again, certain she'd made her point.

Because they weren't in agreement! Not at all!

Dante was back at the door in a flash, pressing his hand against the door. "I said no."

You were just lucky her tear ducts didn't work. She'd have to settle for giving you a wounded expression, complete with the kind of confusion a puppy would give at getting kicked.

"Partyyyyyyyy," she moaned again. "Frieeeeeeends."

"You'd eat your friends," Dante pointed out. He sighed. "Fine. Books."

Only the ones who weren't monsters! And, really, what kind of friends could humans really be, all fragile and delicious and filled with tasty brains the way the were.

Neither of them were thrilled with the book compromise, but Kathy stumbled over to her bookcase anyway, her gait lurching and unsteady. She grabbed several, mostly because her hands were too clumsy to select just one, and brought the bright and glossy books over to Dante.

"Boooooooooooks," she said. She couldn't read and her comprehension wasn't much better, but the pictures were colorful and that was enough.

At least she was easy enough to please?

Dante pulled up a chair as she moved, jamming it up against her door.

Then he took the books and sat down. "Fine," hemuttered. "Uh, a long, long time ago in a kingdom far away..."
