33 Apocalypse Ave, Late Sunday Afternoon

Anders' cooking skills mostly stalled out at grilled cheese and cans of soup, but the holiday season and its influx of guests had him wanting to try something new. (He was going to blame it on Kathy's influence.) He stopped by Turtle & Canary for supplies and then set up a baking station in the kitchen.

First on the list of things to try: cornflake Christmas wreaths. They seemed easy right up to the part where he started trying to shape the melted marshmallows and cereal into wreaths and found out exactly how fast a mage could get marshmallow all over every surface in the kitchen.

"Hairballs, I think I'll be okay," Kathy confided. "I'm more worried about starting to extol the virtues of the 'nip."

This conversation was not getting any less ridiculous.

Dante grinned, sliding past him to go check out the chips. "You know it's dangerous leaving shit like this lying around in a house with Isabela in it," he said. "She's gonna go for all that booty."

Sure, Isabela was the one raiding the chips right now.

"See, then we'd have to send you to rehab. The intervention would be pretty epic, though. . . ."

"Well, sorry for you being from the fifties," Dante said. "Can't see you as a Stepford Housewife."

"Actually? Not the magic I was looking forward to," Kathy said, waggling hers right back. "But if you wanna show off a bit, I can make the time."

She followed him over to the counter, snagging s fingerful of the buttery, marshmallowy mixture he was working with. "You know, white vinegar will probably remove this all pretty fast," she said. "I'll help you clean up when you're done? But you probably don't want to be baking with vinegar fumes in your nostrils."

"I can quit the nip anytime I want!"

"There's a couple hundred of us on th' road at any point in time during th' season, an' even more when we're home at th' ranch," Ada replied, grabbing the flour. "'S cheaper t' buy ingredients in bulk an' cook th' same thing at once, so everyone ends up taking turns in th' kitchen trailer, making dinner for th' rest of th' family."

"I cook just fine in bulk. Small batches are harder for me."

Isabela was also laughing at Anders. Unlike other people she wasn't offering to help.

That would just end badly for all concerned.

"What's so funny?" Anders called, though he didn't sound too horribly affronted. "Careful, or I'll make you help."

"Good thing that six of us counts as about a dozen normal people," Anders said, glancing around the kitchen. "We don't need a small batch."

"And I don't think the wreaths would be improved by smelling like vinegar, either," Anders agreed. "Thanks but no thanks."

He watched her finger slide into her mouth. "How's it taste?"

"It's not her fault. You know what they say," Anders said, squeezing Dante's butt with his less-sticky hand. "You should never trust a pirate around booty."

"It'd make a better one if we had some hot sauce or cheese to put on them."

"Put 'th wax paper down, we'll make th' treats on it, an' then they won't stick to th' countertop," Ada coached, "--an' a little flour on our fingers will keep it from sticking to us."

She gave Anders a grin. "You guys still eat like you got five more stomachs t' fill?"

Ada just grinned, beckoning at her with sugary, sticky fingers. "Ain't you gonna come help?

Raven shifted to something more fifties appropriate. "Maybe not. But I could fake it well enough. That's all most of them were doing anyway."

"We're only here because we love you, Kathy, and we want what's best for you!"

Raven, having no idea what her counterpart got up to last weekend, gave Ada a wave.

"Hey. Happy Christmas, or whatever."

"Just think, thanks to modern science, you can have hot sauce, cheese, and blue dye!"

"I couldn't possibly," Isabela protested, adopting her most pious expression. "No Rivaini could ever participate in heathen non-Andrastian festivities."

There was no universe in which Isabela "helping" ended in cornflake wreaths.

"What'll you give me if I do?"

Dante tossed him a wink, snagging a hand full of chips before he returned to Anders' side.

"And we got a lot of pretty booty in this house," he said. "Maybe should've thought this one through before we let her in."

"Not without screaming on the inside," said Dante, who didn't have a supplicating bone in his body.
