Anders knew dinosaurs and dragons were not the same thing.

For one thing, they were from completely different worlds. And for another, dinosaurs were actually extinct, not just biding their time high in the mountains. And Anders had never seen whole real dragon bones ... but there was a whole dinosaur skeleton rising up toward the ceiling here in the science museum, each tooth in its massive jaw bigger than his hand.

He gaped at it as he groped for Kathy's hand. There were plenty of non-dinosaur things to see in the museum, but it was going to take him a while to tear himself away from this one.

"Shhhh!" Kathy said, upgrading from a blush to hiding her face behind her hands. "I'm very mature and cool about everything, shhh!"

"I can tell," Anders said, biting back his grin. "That's exactly how I react when I feel extra-mature and cool."

"Glad we're in agreement," Kathy said, sticking her tongue out at him. "Also, you're terrible and I'm the saddest, most put upon girlfriend probably in all of existence."

"Poor, poor you," Anders said, and stepped to the side so they could get back to their tour of the museum. "All right. I'm done being terrible. What should we go see once I've gotten a little more time with the dinosaurs?"

"That sounds unlikely," Kathy sniffed, stealing a kiss as she passed him. "Your well of terrible is pretty deep."

She grinned and then checked the pamphlet she'd grabbed when they came in, because of course she had.

"Wanna check out The Shed? That sounds both fun and kinda ominous. First come, first serve, it says."

"Is that the part where they let you build things?" Anders checked, stealing a glance at the pamphlet. (He hadn't picked one up for himself, but he had read the signs in the museum atrium.) "I wouldn't mind doing that. You can see what an amazing carpenter I am."

He was not.

It took a special kind of nerd to want a pamphlet in addition to all the other signage around.

"Got a lot of woodworking experience under your belt?" Kathy asked, tone perfectly innocent.

The look she slanted him was very much not, all naughty glee at pulling off that joke.

"I have handled so much wood and done it so well, you wouldn't even believe it," Anders said, leaning into the naughty joke with gusto. "That's why they call me Lumberjack Anders."

"Exactly who calls you that?" Kathy asked, cracking up. "I would like their names and addresses, please. All of them. I need to discuss their nicknaming choices."

"People," Anders harrumphed. "You don't know them. They live in Canada Thedas. I was Lumberjack Anders, my best friend was Fishwife Samara, Cobbler Kyde lived two roads down..."

"This is how we know I named Carys in those futures where she existed," Kathy said, practically doubled over. "Your choice in names is awful, Hortense Thrushbeard the V or whatever."

"How dare you," Anders said in mock reproach. "And it's Hortense Throatwarbler the third. It's a very honorable and traditional name."

It was not.

"Please," Kathy said, linking her arms with Anders, "do tell me all about the ancient and eternal order of the Hortense Throatwarblers. I'm fascinated."

"It started long, long ago in a tiny village high in the Anderfels," Anders began, speaking slowly as they walked. "The Throatwarblers were beet farmers, with lovely singing voices. And their youngest son had the most beautiful voice of all."

"Please tell me this story comes with examples of the singing," Kathy said, turning big eyes on him and clasping her hands in front of her chest. "It's all I want in the world."

“For you?” Anders asked gallantly. “Of course there are demonstrations of the singing.”

Then, when he considered which songs he knew that Kathy didn’t: “But the Throatwarblers had a funny tradition. Their favorite songs were about ... dogs.”

"I knew you loved me," Kathy said, clapping her hands in glee. "And of course they were. They're Ferelden aren't they?"

If there was one thing that Kathy had picked up over the years, it was that Ferelden was a land of dogs, mud, and, like, turnips.

And giant spiders. And more mud.

“Right,” Anders nodded. “And like all good Fereldans, the Throatwarbler clan loves Mabari hounds almost as much as they love Andraste. Maybe a little more.”

He glanced around at the crowd. It seemed like the room was noisy enough to cover his singing.

"I mean, who doesn't?" Kathy asked piously. "How many country songs are written about the relationship between a man and his dog and his god?"

"I'm going to say a lot?" Anders ventured. "So I guess our worlds are more alike than I thought."

"A fair number," Kathy agreed. "Fewer than a man, his dog, and his truck - and now I'm wondering how many Ferelden songs include their horses, too."

She nudged him. "Let's hear some of this golden throat warbling."

"Can't distract you any longer, huh?" Anders asked, and pretended to sigh.

"All right. So Hortense Throatwarbler the first would open his golden throat and sing just like this."

"You know Andraste's old mabari.
He don't show up in the Chant.
And if you ask those holy sisters,
Well, they'll say Andraste can't
Have had some big old smelly wardog...."

He noticed a few people giving him wary looks, and ignored them. He'd pay the same admission fee as anyone else; he had every right to sing if he wanted to.

Besides, the looks Kathy was giving him were far from wary. She was all sunshine and smiles, clutching her cheeks like a little kid at Christmas.

Anders finished singing and -- when he noticed how rapt Kathy looked -- took a deep bow.

"And that was what the Throatwarblers all loved to sing."

"That is...definitely a song," Kathy concluded, pulling him into a hug and offering him a kiss for his performance. "I can only imagine how moving that must have been for you to share it with me, Hortense. I'm honored."
