Info Post: The Runaway Mage

Anders is one of the companions in video games Dragon Age: Origin - Awakening and Dragon Age II. He is a mage from a fantasy world that doesn't trust magic.

He's also pretty snarky.

Magic is an inborn trait in Anders' world, and is managed by confining mages within Circle of Magi. This is held to be both for their safety, and for that of the larger community. A religious military order known as Templars run the Circles and have complete power over mages within.

Mages are taken from their families as children. The children are then raised and trained to use their powers within Circle of Magi. Children and teenagers within Circles are known as apprentices. When they become adults, they go through a ceremony called the Harrowing in which they are asked to prove they cannot be tempted by a demon before being admitted as full members of the Circe. Mages who refuse to be tested are made Tranquil -- a process that basically converts them to zombies. Mages who fail their Harrowing, on the other hand, are killed.

Life in the Circle isn't all bad for obedient Mages. They have some freedom, and are not forced to work for the Templars. However, they are confined for life, are usually required to live far from cities, and are not allowed to raise children. Mages who live outside the Circle are called apostates and are officially criminals. They seem to be broadly tolerated, but always run the risk of being sent to the Circle or even killed if they come to the notice of the Templars.

Anders had a relatively normal childhood -- plus or minus magically setting a barn on fire and freaking his father out -- until he was 12. At that age, templars clapped him in handcuffs and took him to the local Circle of Magi. Within the circle, he trained his powers and made at least one close Mage friend. But he hated the oppressive nature of Circle life, running away regularly enough that there was a templar on routine "drag Anders back to the Circle" duty.

One of those escape attempts is going to get him to Fandom.

Anders is still an apprentice mage, but he's got some (literal) firepower. He can hurl fire, ice and spirit bolts at an enemy using a staff, and can also use spiritual energy to heal. By the time he's into his full powers he'll be able to heal anything short of death, but at 16 he's not quite there.

Anders is a romantic whose morality tends toward the ends justifying the means. But in most ways, he's a pretty easygoing guy. The giant honking exception is around the treatment of mages. He finds the entire concept of the Circle completely reprehensible, and it doesn't take a whole lot to get him going on that subject -- be prepared for an earful if you mention magic around him.

Also, he loves cats.

Spoiler: At one point in the games, Anders decides to let a demon share his body. This leads to some personality changes and a whole heap of trouble. But that hasn't happened yet for this Anders, and won't for quite some time.

Anders is slightly taller than average and solidly built, with dirty blond hair he pulls into a stubby ponytail, brown eyes, and a sharp nose. He wears a hoop earring in his right ear and generally dresses like he just stepped out of a fantasy video game (I know, weird) -- tunics, cloaks, breeches, boots, and a long staff strapped to his back whenever he's out and about. For whatever reason, the Dragon Age fandom isn't real big on gifs of this guy that aren't either jokes or teeny. But this is what he looks like:

And here he is healing with orbs:

I'm using Toby Regbo, who is on Reign, as a PB. I don't watch his show. (Yet.) Of course, last time I used a PB from some random show I don't watch because he fit the art and I thought he was cute, it was Tyler Posey and the show was Teen Wolf. So I fully expect the Reign fandom to explode pretty soon.

Anyhow, this is the type of thing Anders would totally say:

And here he is just being a cutie:

It's probably worth mentioning Anders isn't the character's real name -- Word of God says it's a nickname, based on where his family is originally from. But he's not going to tell people that if he can help it.

Hey, it's Elisabeth. Find me on twitter at @septembergrrl; Tumblr at worldleaderpretend; or email at septembergrrl at gmail dot com. My AIM is fakenamecentral but I'm rarely on it anymore.

I am on EST and am usually around on and off pretty much all day, except for how I have small kids and a job that sometimes mean I'm more off than on. But poke me if you have questions or whatever, I promise I don't bite.
