33 Apocalypse Ave, Saturday Morning

It wasn’t often that Anders was the first out of bed on a weekend, but he’d somehow managed it today. He slipped out of bed without disturbing Dante or Kathy and went for a rambling walk across the icy island, keeping an eye peeled for anything that might work in potions.

He didn’t find any plants worth gathering — he supposed that was too much to expect for February, anyhow — but he did find still-warm croissants at Jeff, GoB’s, and he reckoned that was almost as good. He put the pastries into a basket and started the coffee, enjoying the moment of peace.

"No," Anders said, reaching to tousle that thick mass of hair. "This is a dream. A very boring dream."

"Makes more sense than being asleep longer than you and Dante," Kathy said, smiling a little at Anders' hand in her hair. "I don't mind boring dreams anyway."

They so often beat the alternative.

"They're better than some of the other types," Anders said lightly. "And I know, I can't even remember the last time you slept in."

Kathy yawned and gave him a sweet, sleepy smile. "And I can't remember the last time you were up early," she teased. "Clearly we didn't tire you out enough last night."

"Obviously not," Anders laughed. "I guess we'll need to try harder tonight."

"Why wait?" Kathy asked, right before her stomach rumbled. "Okay, I guess that's a compelling reason to wait until after breakfast, at least."

"There are croissants," Anders said, half-disappointed. "And I can make some eggs, I think. If we still have eggs."

"Croissants?" Kathy asked, perking up. "I don't suppose you got chocolate ones?"

Kathy was a sucker for chocolate croissants. It was a personal failing. "And eggs?"

Having Anders make her breakfast sounded really, really nice.

"Of course I got chocolate ones," Anders said, indignant. "Who do you think I am?"

He'd let Kathy have the bulk of the chocolate croissants, but that didn't mean he wouldn't claim one.

"And I think I can manage an egg for you," he added, generously. "Maybe even two. How should I cook them?"

"I was just checking to make sure you were still the perfect boyfriend," Kathy said. "Other than docking you four points for still not kissing me good morning, I'm pleased to say that you, in fact, remain the perfect boyfriend."

She grinned at him, taking the initiative to grab two chocolate croissants--one for each hand!--and kissing his cheek at the same time. "Umm...fried? Over easy? Please."

“All right, but I need to kiss you good morning before I cook,” Anders said. “I don’t want to lose any more points.”

"I dunno..." Kathy said, pretending to think it over. "Are you just kissing me to keep from losing points? Because that actually loses more points. It's a complicated system."

“More points than I already lost for having needed to be reminded to kiss you?” Anders asked. “I’m starting to think you’re just making this up as you go along.”

"That's just hurtful," Kathy declared. "Here I am, barely awake, still remembering the labyrinthine, random, and rather whimsical system of points required to name you best boyfriend and you accuse me of making the whole thing up." She shook her head and tsked. "I have half a mind to take away your good hair bonus."

Anders held up a finger "Can we stipulate that Dante has excellent hair too?" he asked.

"Of course!" Kathy said, nodding as she took a bite of croissant, a bit of chocolate smearing on her lip. After she swallowed, she added with real sincerity, "I'm lucky enough to have two best boyfriends."

Anders sighed heavily, leaning in to kiss the chocolate off her lips. "Do we need to talk about what the word best means again?"

"Well, Dante did get up complaining about my toes this morning," Kathy said, pretending to consider it. "But, no, I'm pretty sure I'm using it right."

“I can’t blame him for that,” Anders said. “I’ve never been quite sure how your feet are always that cold.”

"Clearly I just need more warming up," Kathy said, giving him an innocent smile--as one foot started sliding up his inner calf. "There is a saying, you know. 'Cold body warm heart'? Pretty apt."

"I've never heard that," Anders informed her seriously. "I might need a demonstration before I believe it."

"You don't think you've gotten an ample demonstration of just how very warm I can be on the inside?" Kathy asked, trying to look like she hadn't meant that in the most filthy way possible.

"That may actually be the dirtiest thing you've ever said to me," Anders said. "I'm scandalized."

"Really?" Kathy asked. "Clearly I need to up my dirty-talk game." She leaned in and whispered something filthy and explicit in his ear.

Anders went pink.

"I didn't hear that," he lied. "Could you repeat it? Maybe with a little more detail?"
