Room 322, Friday Night
It turned out that collecting the specific fungus Leland had asked for was not quite the easy task Anders had anticipated. He'd found only four rocks with the stuff in hours of scouring the cove, and one of them bore such a small patch he hardly expected the shopkeeper to accept it. His hands were scraped raw from digging up stone by the time the darkness drove him back to the dorms.
He sat on his bed, meaning to heal his bleeding palms but mostly staring into space. As a Tower apprentice, he'd often dreamed of breaking into the locked cellar where phylacteries were kept and stealing his own. Without the enchanted bit of his blood preserved in an amulet, Templars would never be able to track him again, and he'd never have to worry about being hunted down. If the phylactery had mysteriously turned up on the island, Anders felt it had to be a sign from the Maker. It was too clearly meant for him to be a coincidence.
And to come that close to freedom and have Cassandra snatch it away -- he couldn't bear it. He vowed to be back at the cove at first light, and not to leave until he had twenty respectable rocks to hand over.

She was on her way back to the stairs when she passed by Anders' room. And... stopped there, frowning.
"You should see the healer, mage."

This .... might have made sense if Leland wasn't a liar.

If the shop and Leland hadn't been what they were, it might have occurred to Anders that this made very little sense -- either the phylactery being on the island, or Cassandra bidding on it instead of waving her sword around until Leland handed it over. But something about both of them eradicated his natural suspicion.

Outside of knowing Anders had no business possessing his own.
"I have been to no shop," she said, narrowing her eyes. "Your phylactery? Why is it here, and not at Kinloch Hold?"
She'd be stepping into Anders' room, now.

"I imagine it sprouted little legs and walked over," Anders informed her. "They do that if they get lonely for us."
He still didn't understand why Cassandra was lying, and had decided to resolve the issue by being as infuriating as he could manage.

And if so, why was he attempting to hold her responsible for his own infraction?

He looked her over. "Why do you want it, anyhow? You already know where I am."
no subject
She hadn't known about it before. That didn't mean she didn't believe she should have it.
no subject
It was his blood, so it belonged on the inside of his skin, right? Even if he knew perfectly well that wasn't what Cassandra meant.

Cassandra's mouth twisted up into a silent snarl. "Do not play me for a fool, mage," she snapped.

The 'go' was accompanied by a little "shoo now" gesture, just in case she failed to get the hint.

Clearly whoever this merchant was, they needed to be made to see sense.

Feeling he'd made his point -- such as it was -- he added, "That Leland fellow at Needful Things has it, which you should also know. Tell him I said hello when you stop by."
no subject
As evidenced by how she turned on her heel and marched out of Anders' room without another word.

"I'll die before I let you get it," he called after her instead, which might it have been quite true but was entirely satisfactory as an attempt to get the last word.
Then, feeling even more spent, he hunched over his hands again and summoned the blue glow of healing. That, at least, he could fix.
