Room 322, Friday Night

It turned out that collecting the specific fungus Leland had asked for was not quite the easy task Anders had anticipated. He'd found only four rocks with the stuff in hours of scouring the cove, and one of them bore such a small patch he hardly expected the shopkeeper to accept it. His hands were scraped raw from digging up stone by the time the darkness drove him back to the dorms.

He sat on his bed, meaning to heal his bleeding palms but mostly staring into space. As a Tower apprentice, he'd often dreamed of breaking into the locked cellar where phylacteries were kept and stealing his own. Without the enchanted bit of his blood preserved in an amulet, Templars would never be able to track him again, and he'd never have to worry about being hunted down. If the phylactery had mysteriously turned up on the island, Anders felt it had to be a sign from the Maker. It was too clearly meant for him to be a coincidence.

And to come that close to freedom and have Cassandra snatch it away -- he couldn't bear it. He vowed to be back at the cove at first light, and not to leave until he had twenty respectable rocks to hand over.

Cassandra had little notion of what was running through Anders' mind: she had been out for late practice, and then she had vanished into the first unoccupied bathroom she could find for a shower. It happened to be on the third floor.

She was on her way back to the stairs when she passed by Anders' room. And... stopped there, frowning.

"You should see the healer, mage."

But as it stood, it made no sense at all. Cassandra frowned. "What phylactery?" she asked, suspicion sneaking into her voice. "What are you talking about?"

On that note, truthfully, if Anders protested when it was time to return to Thedas, Cassandra felt it was rather more straightforward simply to knock him unconscious. She had little instruction in the specific usage of phylacteries, after all.

Outside of knowing Anders had no business possessing his own.

"I have been to no shop," she said, narrowing her eyes. "Your phylactery? Why is it here, and not at Kinloch Hold?"

She'd be stepping into Anders' room, now.

"This is not a laughing matter," Cassandra snapped. "Did you pay someone to steal it?"

And if so, why was he attempting to hold her responsible for his own infraction?

"If your phylactery is here, that means it is not where it belongs," Cassandra said flatly. "And we both know you would never return it to its rightful place."

She hadn't known about it before. That didn't mean she didn't believe she should have it.

"Ugh."

Cassandra's mouth twisted up into a silent snarl. "Do not play me for a fool, mage," she snapped.

"Who is the merchant who made the offer?" Cassandra barked.

Clearly whoever this merchant was, they needed to be made to see sense.

"I will not allow you to endanger anyone on this island, mage," Cassandra said. Her anger had now cooled, but merely into a different brand of anger.

As evidenced by how she turned on her heel and marched out of Anders' room without another word.
