Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, Saturday Afternoon

Anders had planned to go to the hotel first when he and Nathan got to town, but when the portal deposited them within sight of the ocean being inside seemed decidedly beside the point. He hesitated on the sidewalk and turned to his companion.

"Are you going to be disappointed if I want to swim before we do anything else?"

"Only if you walked around with your shirt off," Anders pointed out, and then kissed Nathan's neck again before sitting back. "But I wouldn't do it anyhow. And there. We're covered and I am going to the water."

Nathan nodded, smiling slightly. "I'll be right behind you. I'm just gonna get the towels and things out and take a drink of water."

"That sounds like a good idea. I'll see you in a minute," Anders said, and took off across the sand. The water was colder than he'd expected, and rougher; he waded in about to his waist and then stood there, bobbing in the waves as he tried to workout whether he wanted to try to swim.

Nathan pulled the towels out of the bag, laying them out nearby before he took a few sips of water. With that done, he walked down to the water and waded in slowly, letting himself get used to the chilly water before diving on in.

"Anders had been keeping an eye out for Nathan, so he wandered over once he emerged.

"It feels so cold after the sand," he commented, cheerfully enough. "I'm not read to dive under yet."

"It's not so bad," he said, reaching down and cupping his hands so he could scoop some water up and splash it o his chest and neck. "It wakes you up."

"I was already awake," Anders said doubtfully, but copied the gesture anyhow. "...and now I'm even more awake. It feels good, though."

"You'll get used to it," Nathan told him, slipping down shoulder high into the water and dipping his face into the water briefly. "It's usually best just to get it over with but slow isn't terrible either."

"Probably should just get it over with," Anders said. "The longer I think about it, the worse it'll be."

And with that he dove under the next wave, and came up spitting hair out of his mouth and laughing.

"You all right?" Nathan asked him, snickering at the sight Anders made. "Wasn't so bad, right?"

"Not other than the fact my hair's going to make me crazy, it wasn't," Anders agreed.

It was tied back, as usual, but that wasn't really much protection against the ocean.

"No one's hair is safe when you're in the water," he replied, shaking his head. "My hair's not as long as yours and it'll still get in my eyes."

"Probably that's why you don't see many fish with long hair," Anders joked, and dunked his head backwards again so at least his hair would be pointed in one direction.

Nathan started laughing and was still chuckling when Anders came back up. "I'm gonna be picturing fish with hair for the rest of the day, now. Wondering if maybe there's some fish out there that does have hair to prove you wrong."

"I don't know, but now I really want there to be," Anders informed him. "Especially because they'd be completely ridiculous looking."

"It actually wouldn't surprise me if there was," Nathan admitted, shaking his head. "There's weird colored deer on the island. Why not fish with hair?"

"I don't have a good answer to that," Anders admitted. "And even if there aren't any here, all that proves is we aren't in the right world for them. Somewhere in all the universes, there have to be hairy fish."

"Well, I'm not gonna go looking for them this weekend," Nathan said, ducking under water and staying there for a few seconds. The cool water felt good on his skin.

He popped up again. "Better things to do."

"Much better things to do," Anders nodded, and resisted the impulse to make a joke out of it somehow. "I'm just happy to have time with you away from the island. The swimming and everything's a bonus."

"Don't get enough time with me back on the island?" he teased, swimming closer. "Aw."

"I know, I'm hopeless," Anders sighed, grinning back. "I was thinking about shrinking myself so I could just live in your pocket, but this seemed a little less weird."

"And I think you'd get rather tired of being so tiny after awhile," Nathan mused. "You might get stepped on or eaten by your cat."

"That was the other problem," Anders agreed, idly twirling his fingers through the water as he spoke. "That, and we wouldn't be able to do anything together. Probably I'd have to climb up to your ear so you could even hear me talk."

Nathan snickered and rubbed at his ear, unable to himself. "That would be so weird to think about. It'd be like you were a mosquito buzzing at my ear. I probably would try and swat you."

"And then either I'd be smashed and dead, or we'd have to split up because you tried to smash me," Anders informed him. "See? Beach vacation is much better."
