33 Apocalypse Ave, Late Sunday Afternoon

Anders' cooking skills mostly stalled out at grilled cheese and cans of soup, but the holiday season and its influx of guests had him wanting to try something new. (He was going to blame it on Kathy's influence.) He stopped by Turtle & Canary for supplies and then set up a baking station in the kitchen.

First on the list of things to try: cornflake Christmas wreaths. They seemed easy right up to the part where he started trying to shape the melted marshmallows and cereal into wreaths and found out exactly how fast a mage could get marshmallow all over every surface in the kitchen.

Raven didn't spend a lot of time in the house, but Christmas Eve seemed like the sort of time you were supposed to be around people, so here she was, hovering uncomfortably off to one side.

Which at least meant she didn't have to worry about getting marshmallow on her scales.

"Looks delicious. Why are they green?"

"I think they're supposed to look like plants and shit?"

Dante, nobody asked your opinion. Especially not while you were snacking on stray marshmallow in the corner.

"Huh," Raven said. "Is that why he's making them into little balls and things?"

"Yeah, they're supposed to be those round Christmas things?" Dante said. "I saw a picture."

"Oh." Raven nodded. "Festive. You know, they used to do stuff like this back home, in the '50s. Maybe Anders can make a tuna fish tree next."

"Or stick everything in jello," Dante offered merrily.

[tigerundercover]

"He should get a mold for the shapes," Raven said. "Everyone knows the best way to get the right shape is to use a jello mold."

Dante snickered. "... Think Kathy sells jello molds?"

"You know, I'm not sure I'd want jello in the places Kathy's store specializes in."

See, the thing about that was Raven was not taking 'hyperactive bestie' into account. "Raven!" Kathy called, bouncing across the kitchen to try to wrap her into a hug. And yes, she was covered in marshmallow sticky from stealing bites and the occasional attempt to help.

"Gyah! Sticky! Sticky Kathy!" Was there something she could shift to that would repel marshmallow? "How much sugar have you had?"

"Enough to think that this is hilarious," Kathy assured her. "And not enough to let you and Dante anywhere near my jello molds."

"That's for the best. Dante's taste in jello is creepy."

"Don't you kinkshame my boyfriend," Kathy said, struggling (and failing) to keep a straight face. "What we get up to upstairs..."

"Is deeply unhygienic," Raven teased. "You guys should be ashamed."

"If I told you once, I told you a thousand times," Kathy said airily. "Don't knock cat toys until you've tried them. And it's not like we give them back to the cats!"

Kathy had no idea what the hell she was talking it, but she wasn't about to let that stop her.

"If you start coughing up hairballs," Raven said. "I may have to disown you."

"Food coloring," Anders said. "I'm not totally convinced it won't make us sick, but it's supposed to be festive."

[tigerundercover]

"I mean, the whole point of food coloring is that it's edible," Raven pointed out. "People were pretty excited when they were first invented."

The 20th century was a wild, strange time in food technology.

"Really?" Anders frowned. "I don't get it. What was wrong with the colors food was to start with?"

"When you basically boil everything, stuff looks pretty gross."

Anders made a face. "That was how we ate at home. Meat, potatoes and boiled things."

[tigerundercover]

"See? And wouldn't it be an interesting change if the potatoes were, like, blue?"

"It'd make a better one if we had some hot sauce or cheese to put on them."

[tigerundercover]

"Just think, thanks to modern science, you can have hot sauce, cheese, and blue dye!"
